This state-of-the-art, new construction facility for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), in Weaverville, NC, specializes in Behavioral Rehabilitation. The overall programming for this facility boasts 29,265 sf of covered space (21,600 sf conditioned), and includes 72 interior kennels with adjacent personal exterior kennels accessed by a private interior guillotine door. This facility also includes an indoor open treatment and training area, multiple indoor/outdoor “real life” and evaluation areas, isolation and quarantine areas, three outdoor fenced-in dog runs, and a 10-bed dorm for educational purposes. This Behavioral Rehabilitation Program was developed by the ASPCA to help address the increasing concerns of overrun puppy mills in the United States. Most of the dogs that are taken in from these types of places have had little, or no human interface, which makes adoption impossible. The groundbreaking design for this facility focused on visual separation and noise control and is intended to allow the staff to care for the dogs while being able to restrict interaction with them until they are ready. This facility’s intent is to be utilized as a teaching model for similar programs across the country.
